A comprehensive study of 53,597 games released on Steam from July 2023 to July 2026 shows that 60β90% of the growth in monthly releases is attributable to AI-flagged games. Despite this surge, these AI-assisted titles account for only 10% of sales in Q2 2026, even though they make up 33% of new releases.
This suggests that while AI tools lower barriers to entry and increase the number of games brought to market, they do not guarantee profitability. The majority of AI-generated games are not financially successful, highlighting a disconnect between ease of creation and commercial viability.
For indie and solo developers, this underscores the importance of focusing on quality, originality, and market fit rather than relying solely on AI to drive success. Differentiation and thoughtful design remain essential in a crowded marketplace.
